What APTimer is

Free Wi-Fi at cafés and stations is usually capped at 30 or 60 minutes, but the remaining time lives on the access point and cannot be read from your phone. APTimer lets you record that limit yourself and warns you before it runs out.

Getting started

  1. Open the app while connected to Wi-Fi and tap "Register current Wi-Fi"
  2. Enter the session length in minutes and tap Done. Timing starts immediately
  3. You get a notification when time is running low. The remaining time also appears on the Lock Screen

Starting automatically on connect (iOS)

On iOS an app cannot watch Wi-Fi connections on its own. Register this once in the built-in Shortcuts app:

  1. Open Shortcuts and pick "Automation" at the bottom
  2. Tap "+" and search for "Wi-Fi"
  3. Choose the network, keep "Is Joined", pick "Run Immediately" and tap Next
  4. From the action list choose "APTimer" → "Start timer"

FAQ

Q. Why does it ask for location permission?

The OS requires it in order to read the name (SSID) of the Wi-Fi you are connected to. APTimer never obtains or records GPS coordinates. See the Privacy Policy.

Q. What happens if I only allow "While Using the App"?

Timing stops the moment you close the app. "Always" is required to keep counting in the background.

Q. The timer starts with less time than I entered

The timer is anchored to the moment the internet became reachable (when sign-in completed), not to the moment you joined the Wi-Fi, because that is when the venue's limit actually starts.

Q. It says "past estimate" but I can still browse

Your recorded limit has passed, but the internet is still reachable. It switches to "time is over" once the connection is actually cut.

Q. How do I reconnect after the time is up?

Open Settings → Wi-Fi, join again and complete the sign-in page. (iOS does not allow apps to open Wi-Fi settings directly.)

Q. I don't want it running on my home Wi-Fi

Register that network and turn on "Exclude (home etc. — timer stays off)".

Q. Where is my data stored?

On your device only. There is no server and no account. Everything is erased when you delete the app.
